Why do you have to be under 56 to register?

You can be asked to donate stem cells up to and including the age of 55. Registration is free of charge for people aged 18 to 35. From the age of 36 up to 55, a one-off personal contribution of €35 is required to cover the cost of registration.

I’m  over 55 so why can’t I be a stem cell donor anymore?

For younger donors, the risks associated with stem cell donation are very low. As donors get older, the potential risks of donation can increase. We want to avoid this, which is why we have set an upper age limit. This certainly does not mean that people above this age are too old or no longer healthy. For family donors, for example, this age limit does not apply.

Matchis strives to provide safe and effective stem cells for patients with serious conditions. Safety also means — and above all — that the stem cell donation must be safe for the donor.
